Authors: Claire K. Sargent and Claire King Sargent
Average review score:

If you want to be inspired, read this book!
Claire Sargent's journey from childhood to adulthood reads like a novel... entertaining, humorous, a real page-turner. She gives the inside dish on what it is REALLY like to run for political office, and what she had to endure during her 1992 campaign against John McCain. Reading "Journey Proud" made me proud to be a woman and I thank Ms. Sargent for letting us peek into her life as she paved the way for others to follow in her footsteps

Keys to Success: How to Achieve Your Goals (Brief 2nd Edition)

Winning in The Game of Life
This book should be read not only by students but also by anyone who is still unsure about what they are doing and where they are going. It covers a wide range of topics and addresses serious issues that face especially the teens and young adults as they make a transition from school to society. These range from help with learning and time management to issues on sexual decisions and substance abuse. The layout and graphics make it appealing and easy to read. "Keys to Success" systematically takes student readers through their final years in schools and helps them to think seriously about their goals in school, their careers and ultimately their future lives. Coupled with questionnaires and written exercises, it really leads to greater self-awareness and confidence. I would recommend that parents of teenage children get this book for them and better still go through it with them, if their schools do not use it in their curriculum. Not only students, but anyone who still feels unsure of himself or herself could benefit from this book. We all have goals and dreams for our future. This book shows us how we can take charge and emerge winners in the game of life.

Know Your Own Psi-Q
Published in Paperback by Pharos Books (June, 1984)
Authors: Carl Sargent and H.J. Eysenik
Average review score:

How psychic are you?
Have you ever changed your mind because intuition demanded that you do so? How about that dream that came true or a de'ja vu? What explains that odd feeling that someone is staring at you, or knowing the phone will ring and who will be calling? Why can you "hear" someone else's thoughts, though their words are unsaid? These are variations of ESP (extra sensory perception) or the sixth sense.

Scientists debate the probability of psychic skills; they want proof in the form of repeatable, controllable experiments. Most of the time the psi talent is quixotic and theories remain just that. However, anyone who has experienced the paranormal recognizes that something strange and unexplainable has happened.

Testing: There are over thirty games and experiments to measure and explore ESP. These are not complicated setups requiring labs and isolation, but can be done in front of the fireplace with a standard deck of cards or a pair of dice. More complicated tests are described as well. Telepathy is the psi of sending thoughts -- similar to saying the same thing at the same time as your companion, or completing a sentence for someone else. Over all these games can be fun. If the test is done with ten items, and if you or your friends happen to have scores of 0-2 or 8-10, remember that is outside the standard 50% chance. Too low or too high indicates psi.

Writers of any genre can benefit from this how-to book. Having the detailed descriptions of events that occur in a controlled environment can help writers create characters and stories that have veracity. Since these tests are easily conducted in the home or in public, the information gleaned can be the crux of rich characters and plots because the experiences are not imagined. Correct terminology and settings let the reader trust enough to suspend disbelief. The characters and scenes may well take over the story because they are the psychic aspects.

What neural transmitters remain dormant in the unused portion of the brain? Well, that's another story.

Five stars for usability, information, creativity, and ingenuity.

Life and Career of Major John Andre
Published in Hardcover by Irvington Pub (December, 1972)
Author: Winthrop Sargent
Average review score:

Major Andre answers incorrectly and America dodges a bullet
Everyone has heard of Benedict Arnold. He was a traitor during the Revolutionary War. In fact his name is practicly synonomous with being a traitor. So how is it that hardly anyone knows what exactly it was that he did? And what does all this have to do with Major John Andre? Major John Andre was the British Adjunct General during the Revolutionary War. That meant he was sort of a personal secretary to the commanding General of the British forces in America. It was Andre who negotiated with Benedict Arnold. Arnold at the time was the commander of West Point. And it was West Point that Arnold promised to the British for a sum of 20,000 pounds sterling. Most of the time they communicated in code which was fine for short messages. However in order to work out the attack on West Point they needed to meet face to face. Which they did. This presented a problem for Arnold who didn't want to be seen meeting with a British officer. So he told Andre to come in civilians clothes. Which of course made Andre nervous because if he were caught he could be hung as a spy. And thats pretty much what happened. Riding along with the plans for the attack of West Point Andre was stopped by a group of men. He noticed one of them wore a hessian coat so he thought he was amoung friends. He sought to impress them with his ring and his watch and told them he was a British Officer on important business and must not be delayed. That impressed them alright. They siezed both the ring and watch and anything else he had which they were entitled to do under the law of that day. Too bad he didn't show them the pass from General Arnold that he had on him. He tried the pass but oh too late. You said you were a British officer and pass or no pass we are taking you to the American troops. And so they did. This book was written over a hundred years ago. It goes over the happenings from many different sources. A very useful book if you want to understand what happened and why.

Middenheim : City of Chaos
Published in Paperback by Hogshead Publishing Ltd (01 May, 1998)
Authors: Carl Sargent, Phil Gallagher, Tony Ackland, Charles Elliott, Martin McKenna, Russ Nicholson, and Stephen Tappin
Average review score:

The best investigative adventure ever published
I am a longtime gamer who probably has spent more on rolegaming then I can afford since the late 1980's. My shelves are filled with books for dozens of game-systems but Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) remains one of my personal favourites.

This superlative product was originally published by Games Workshop as two separate books: Power Behind the Throne and Warhammer City - Middenheim. This Hogshead version has the full material from both books in one handy volume. The first section of the book, Power Behind the Throne details an extremely intricate conspiracy by the forces of Chaos in the city Middenheim.

A distinct contrast to the wimpy plots so prevalent in the fantasy roleplaying industry, this is a grade-A, master-level investigative scenario for the veteran player. The huge cast of characters each playing a part in the adventure, yet having motivations and plans of their own, make this adventure a real challenge for players and gamemasters.

This book should be on every gamer's shelf, regardless of which game system you play as an example of how it should be done. Be warned though, the deep roleplaying and many conversations required will bore the combat-oriented player to tears. Real roleplayers who fancy themselves as the fantasy equivalent of Poirot or Holmes will have the case of their lives to unravel.

National Electrical Code 2002 Handbook

Average review score:

Amazing.
If you hang around with fellow homeowners, there's a lot of water cooler conversation about various things, including the electrical code. This book just nails everything you ever wondered about, everything you haven't yet wondered about, and a few thousand things that you'll never need to know. Want to install a subpanel? Want to figure what gauge of cable to use to supply it? Want to know how to calculate the in^3 fill of a box? How deep to bury an underground cable? How to use raceways? That information totals about 1/4 of 1% of the contents of this book.

The Original Biography of Abbie Burgess, Lighthouse Heroine
Published in Paperback by Lighthouse Digest (October, 1996)
Authors: Dorothy Jones, Dorothy Holder Jones, and Ruth Sexton Sargent
Average review score:

A great book about lighthouse history and living conditions!
This book is about Abbie, a lighthouse keeper. She was 14 when she set foot on the rock. The book describes what it was like living on the rock, and what it was like taking care of the lights. The book describes very well what it was like living back when there were no switch lights. They had to use a wood basin to clean themselves in, and in the winter she had to scrape the ice off the glass of the lighthouse windows. In one of the chapters there was a big storm. The sailers got together and got her a big silverbowl for maintaining her courage and being faithful to her duty. It was a very good book about lighthouse history. Cami and Kristina (age 8)

This book rocked my world
Well, Mr Sargent, you are quite the teacher. I recently read your book, and it truly has changed my life. Using both hemispheres in my brain has helped me understand how I work. When I need to memorize something, I switch hemispheres and go to work. The information and knowledge that you share in your book is a wonderful addition to anyone's mind. I have become a better student and friend because of your book. Hopefully we can play golf sometime.
